    Randall: Overcoming a Catastrophic Accident

Randall was admitted to Kindred Hospital Sacramento from an area short-term acute care hospital. He had been t-boned in a motor-vehicle accident and suffered various injuries, including a brain hemorrhage, burns, wounds and multiple fractures.

Once his condition stabilized, Randall came to Kindred Hospital Sacramento for continued wound care, ventilator weaning and rehabilitation.

The interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists and specialist first needed to manage his delirium and agitation. The first goal was to decrease his confusion through medication management. Randall successfully became more engaged and cooperative as the medication left his system.

Randall was weaned from his ventilator and decannulated by Kindred’s respiratory therapists nine days after admission. He then began to work with all modalities of our rehabilitation team, having great outcomes with speech, occupational and physical therapies.

Having made tremendous progress, Randall was able to discharge to his home thanks to the hard work of our rehabilitation, nursing, wound care and clinical staff. Discharging directly to home was an amazing ending for Randall as he did not need further assistance from a lower intensity level of care upon leaving Kindred.

Randall’s Kindred caregivers are hopeful that he can return to the martial arts he had practiced for the past 30 years, Tai Chi most recently. Watching this patient and his determination to overcome such a catastrophic accident truly lifted the spirits of his family and the family of Kindred Hospital Sacramento.
